TOUR GUIDE | SWELLENDAM | WESTERN CAPE
Since the 1500's independent travellers and explorers have used Swellendam as the gateway between Cape Town and the South African interior. Founded in 1746 by Hendrik Swellengrebel, then Governor of the Cape Province, Swellendam is the third oldest town in South Africa.
Resting between the Langeberg Mountains and the N2 highway, approximately 240km from both Cape Town and George, Swellendam is the perfect choice as a base from which to explore the area.
Surrounded by fertile farmland under the spectacular Langeberg mountains near the confluence of three rivers, the town originally grew along the Old Cape Wagon Road, which was well travelled by explorers, hunters and traders. The town’s wide streets are lined with oak trees shading beautiful Cape Dutch and Victorian architecture and is rich in cultural heritage not only of the European settlers, but also the indigenous Khoe-Khoen and San people who lived in the area for many thousands of years before.
Swellendam sits in the middle of the Cape Floristic Region - one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world, and a World heritage site in its entirety. This makes the region incredibly important for conservation, and as such there are no less than two National Parks and dozens of nature reserves within an hours drive - notably the Bontebok National Park, Agulhas National Park, De Hoop and De Mond Nature reserves - all of which feature on Fynbus Tours day trips.
Apart from natural heritage, the area has spectacular mountains and scenery, and Fynbus Tours provides access to some of the best scenery and experiences through scenic drives, horse-riding, quad biking, hiking, canoeing and more.
Last but not least, Swellendam is close to one of the best, most enjoyable and least commercialized wine regions in the Cape - namely the Robertson Wine Valley. Fynbus Tours can custom-design a wine tour to suit you - whether you simply want to enjoy a day touring the wine estates without worrying about drink-driving, or would like to visit particular estates or taste particular varieties types of wine, or simply want to indulge in the wonderful scenery and atmosphere of these beautiful estates - Fynbus Tours’ local knowledge will help you find your way and cut through the bewildering choice to make the most of your time.
