Grootvadersbosch was name after Roelof Oelofse, the “grootvader” (Grandfather) who was assigned this majestic slice of heaven in 1723. This is a perfect spot to visit on the hotter days of summer, as the day walks in the forest are well covered by over 35 species of forest tree, including stinkwood, yellow wood, red alder and ironwood.
Don’t forget to pack your camera and binoculars and keep a lookout for 196 bird species from the vantage point of the reserves tall bird hides. Cape Grysbok can also be found in the forest fringes, while baboons and other small mammals are plentiful, even leopard tracks have been found. A subspecies of the Ghost Frog and a unique emperor butterfly occur only in this forest. If you are feeling energetic we can take along some mountain bikes and enjoy the natural Mountain Biking Tracks.
