DE HOOP NATURE RESERVE
De Hoop Nature Reserve deserves the title of “Jewel of the Cape”, and is without doubt one of the best-kept secrets of South Africa. It is unrivalled as the best and most beautiful place in South Africa to see whales frolicking in the sheltered turquoise waters of their summer calving and mating grounds.
In the words of a recent client, Mr. Marc Merckx from Belgium:

A typical tour includes a game drive where one can see Bontebok, Eland, Cape Mountain Zebra, Grey Rhebok, Baboons, as well as tortoises, snakes, mongooses and countless birds. We then take a walk around the beautiful lake where lizards, dassies and birds are abundant, before taking lunch at the old homestead’s restaurant under magnificent giant fig trees.
The highlight of the day is a drive to Koppie Alleen (Lonely Hill) on the Indian Ocean coat where we can stand on the biggest whitest sand dunes you will ever see and watch the whales leap, roll and loll in the turquoise water, not 100m from the beach.
To get the best of this magical place really requires a full day, especially in Whale season (June to November) although an abbreviated tour to take in whale watching and a game drive is possible in combination with certain other tours, as below:
